B1-1: Project seminar

 Project seminar, 6 contact hours

Learning goalsThe project seminar will allow students to accomplish an empirical research project (for example as an empirical master’s thesis). In the project seminar, students will learn how to work scientifically. Typically, the work on a certain topic requires independent empirical research. This serves as the main reason why students should learn selective empirical research methods and how to use adequate information systems in the data collection, analysis and evaluation. After the seminar, participants shall be able to independently interpret results and deduce implications for research and practical application.
Learning contentThe process of empirical research: literature analysis, problem and hypotheses formulation, research objective identification, designing of research methods, data collection, data analysis, data evaluation, interpretation and discussions of the findings, scientific documentation. Data collection and measurement: measurement approaches, indices and scales, logic of measurement, qualitative and quantitative methods, survey creation Analysis method: content analysis, descriptive statistics, statistic hypotheses testing, statistical significance, data analysis, hypotheses checking, statistical software application, incl. SPSS, AMOS and Mplus.
Forms of knowledge intermediationLecture (6 SWS); Students will have to learn the methods and cooperate in project teams
Recommended previous knowledgeA certain affinity to work empirically, knowledge of the courses “Statistics I” and “Statistics II”
PrerequisitesApplication in advance
Certificate of performanceThe module-related evaluation contains two written seminar papers, the presentation and defence of the content and the active participation on the discussion of other presentations.

  • Lecture: 90 hrs.
  • Implementation of an empirical project (incl. assistance): 210 hrs.
  • Final presentation and exam preparation: 60 hrs
  • Sum: 360 hrs.
